Treat any trees remaining in the zone as a part of the building and expand the amount of defensible space as needed to take trees into account. Stepping again outside of the Randstad, the Mastbos is situated in Brabant, near the pretty city of Breda. This forest is 500 years old, with loads of beautiful mature trees. If your structure is built on a steep slope, increase this distance. Leave at least 5 feet of the structure and deck, bare from ground cover if applicable. Doing this will help to keep flames from being able to directly connect to your structure, especially if it is sided with logs or wood beams, that burn easily. A defensible space can also reduce the likelihood of a structural fire jumping to neighboring structures, or igniting the surrounding woodlands.

And, as most “holes” in your new home are window openings, let’s get these in first. Keep your home maintained, even when you’re not there most of the time. Long grass, fallen trees and shoreline garbage are obvious indicators that no one has been by for a while, and this makes your home a more attractive target for criminals. Make sure that expensive electronic equipment such as computers and flat-screens are not easily noticed by curious observers who decide to peek through your windows. Install automatic timers on indoor lights to deter thieves who may be doing a drive-by to check who’s home. There should be a readily-available onsite water source in Zone 3 for firefighters to use.

This is on the rainy side of the mountains in the Cascade foothills. If you plan on using two full log stringers, lay your second stringer next to this one and carefully mark it exactly the same as the first. Then, using the same notching process you used on your log home notches, making many cuts almost down to your mark with a chainsaw, then trimming out the excess, cut all the notches in both stringers. You will be cutting “C” shaped notches in the log stringer to receive half-log steps. Work the tip of the saw downward into a log, not necessarily the top log.
I made just such a door on the back of our Minnesota homestead many years ago and it’s looking good today. Yep, I know they’re a pain and hot and all of that, but chainsaws can buck back when cutting openings in a log wall, especially if you’re not extremely experienced in operating a saw. As we left our log home project last issue, we had the roofing material on and the log building looking like a home. Your last name and house number should be clearly posted, on fireproof signs near the end of your drive by the main road. Make sure signs can be easily seen by emergency responders by making them reflective.

Minimizing your fire risk is best done during the construction period. However, it’s possible to reduce the ignitibility of an existing structure by keeping a few simple things in mind. Finally, remember that most people aren’t friendly in crisis times. There’s a risk of vandalism and theft, so don’t leave valuable items in your compound unless you create a cache and bury it. Regardless of the location you settle on, make sure you know as much about the area surrounding your house in the woods as you can.
Use a true log sealant, not just your run-of-the-mill stain you got from the lumber yard. It does cost more, but you’ll get much more protection for your buck. And even the best sealants can “wear out” due to weathering and sunlight. You need to check the logs, especially on the south side every few years, recoating when necessary. Some log builders add artistic touches to their log ends, beveling the ends all around, leaving the upper logs longer and cutting a curve down to the mid height and so on.
Now is the time to decide whether you want to use two matching log stringers for your stairway or simply cut this log in half. If you have plenty of room, I’d suggest using two full logs, as it looks great and is very sturdy. I think the perfect log home is incomplete unless it has at least one porch. Not only is a porch soul-satisfying to look at, but it’s darned nice to sit on before work begins in the morning or when we’re tired in the evening. We often spend hours after dark on the porch just looking at the stars.
Pine is shock-resistant and lightweight, making it perfect for use in construction. As the name suggests, hard Maple is more durable than soft Maple. Under the hard Maple category, we count just one Maple species known as Acer Saccharum. On the other hand, multiple Maple species fall into that category for the soft Maple. Both types are used for building, mainly for indoor uses such as making hardwood floors, cabinetry, or furniture. It’s low maintenance, affordable, and can be a beautiful natural element of any home.
It’s pliable, so we don’t recommend using it for flooring due to possible squeaking. New log home came from a builder’s warehouse of rejects.Look in large-city phone books for such a warehouse, under windows or building materials. Ask your large building supply dealer and local large contractors where rejected windows go. You’ll have to do some detective work here, but you can find good buys and still use quality windows that will last for years and help energy costs in the bargain. As we don’t always get the exact sizes in these bargain windows, we usually opt to make our window openings smaller than we figure we can find a window to fit.
